Hi :)

since u seem to know a lot about computers, i was wondering if u guyz could help me out.

i cant get into the chatroom from work. we r in a network and theres definately some sort of firewall that stops me. the error message i get is:

cannot connect to "www.social-connect.com"

the chat uses JAVA

so i guess the problem is obvious ..

so there is many different ways that could lime in

so tell me wat can i do and i will be real grateful :)

thanks in advance.

the company is rather big. its two universities, two different campuses using the same network. and all the big decisions concering the network and its accessbility comes from the main University campus (and i dont work there).

how do i find out wat port the chat is using. and is there any other way i can get around it ?

they probably block access to that website on the gateway. (the gateway is the computer/router that all the computers on the network go through for internet access) ask your IT department about it. btw, should you really be chatting at work? ;)

one idea if they have blocked the website is to use the ip address of the server.... im not saying this will work, but if they use poor equipment then there is a small chance.

social-connect.com - 209.94.128.127

also try http://run.iceglow.com/

not promising that this will work, nor am i saying that it is a good thing to get around bans that in place....

that was a joke. its not a crime to chat from work. but they have blocked it to stop STUDENTS from entering such sites ..but we as employees should be able to access it.

anybody else, with anymore ideas ?

get you computer, go to the gateway, disconnect the gateway from the wan port and connect it to your computer.... ;)

thus elimating the firewall which is blocking the site. now you should be able to view the site.... [even if no one else can't even get the internet]

As a Employee at WORK you should be WORKING, not chatting with your friends. It isn?t against the Law, but it is probably against your Companies policy. It is amazing what people will do to get out of working. Why SHOULD you be able to access it? If it is something you SHOULD be doing, go to your boss, and get him to talk to the IT Dept.

What exactly does "Flame" and "Spam" mean? I know it is probaly documented somewhere here, but I see it alot and have no idea what eaxactly it means.

I am sure (Depending on where he is located) he gets an hour lunch and two 15 min breaks. I doubt very highly that he would use this time to chat with his friends. The other issue is not exactly wasting time, but if everyone used the internet during their breaks, it could use a lot of bandwidth....then it gets to the issue of "Using Company Resources (IE: Computer/Internet) for personal use". Some companies are ok with this, but most are not.

spam - "A trademark used for a canned meat product consisting primarily of chopped pork pressed into a loaf."

taken from - http://www.dictionary.com

lmao

but really

spam - [in the forum sense] "To flood any chat forum or Internet game with purposefully annoying text or macros."

flame - "To rant, to speak or write incessantly and/or rabidly on some relatively uninteresting subject or with a patently ridiculous attitude or with hostility toward a particular person or group of people. "Flame" is used as a verb ("Don't flame me for this, but..."), a flame is a single flaming message, and "flamage" /flay'm*j/ the content"

flame: basically getting off topic, arguing about something unimportant. usually includes several personal insults.

spam: to constantly post junk on a forum, for the purpose to annoy or advertise.
