IE9 32bit no longer runs (64bit okay)

Question

Morning. Since yesterday (possibly earlier, I don't run IE all that often), IE9 32 bit on my Win 7 64 bit laptop has stopped working.

I click the icon, get a brief loading cursor ... and nothing happens. Nothing appears in task manager, resource monitor doesn't show anything in the brief time it's 'loading'. However, the 64 bit version of IE9 seems to work fine. The no addons shortcut for IE9 also doesn't do anything.

For some reason my system restore had been turned off  (turned it back on, and created a restore point) ... so I went the route of uninstalling Silverlight (the last update I got), no change.

Then I uninstalled IE9 itself - on restart, I got an error about ie4unit.exe or similar missing, and IE8 didn't reappear properly. But no matter, I didn't want IE8 anyway - so I reinstalled IE9.

As a result, I'm back where I started. I don't get any errors, the rest of my machine seems to be fine. Basically ... I'm stuck. Not stuck enough that I want to reinstall Windows - like I said, I don't really use IE9, but enough that I'm concerned and want to get it working again. I am fully up to date, and I don't know of anything else unusual on my laptop.

Any thoughts or help is much appreciated!

Updates: I can reach Internet Options fine from control panel without issue. Nothing seems odd there. I've reset the IE settings via it, no change. I have managed to see iexplore.exe in the task manager now, but it's so brief that it often just doesn't show up.

I would try this, disable all the plugins and then reenable them one at a time to see if it's plugin related.

What is interesting is that it wouldn't uninstall it properly!!

Thanks for the suggestions :)

I've tried the no addons shortcut for IE9, no luck. I also tried configuring them from the Internet Options panel, didn't help either.

Yeah, the uninstall thing was odd - what I was really going for was a repair of my IE9 install, but it seems uninstall/install was the only way to do that. The file I think it complained about being missing was ie4uinit .... which is sitting happy in /system32 atm.

I'm running a full scan of MSE in case it finds something.

What does event log say?

Couldn't find anything that occurred when I attempt to start IE. Know of anything specific I should look for?

You could try running this repair script done by a MSMVP

http://iefaq.info/index.php?action=artikel&cat=42&id=133&artlang=en

Iv`e not personally used it but it does claim to work on IE9.

Have you done an advanced restore and checked under Tools->Internet Options->Connections->LAN settings->Automatically detect settings should be checked, not proxy server.

Good luck.

Thanks for the link ... ran it successfully, tried some restarts - but unfortunately no luck.

That`s a bummer Kirkburn it seems like your not the only one experiencing this dilema and from what iv`e seen/read there doesn`t seem to be any reliable fix. Lots of suggestions and such but nothing definate. Have you tried running process monitor when trying to start IE9? Someone did this and saw a lot of file/path not found. Another possibility could be to re-register the .dll`s or go the steps here http://windows7themes.net/internet-explorer-9-not-working-loading-try-this.html and use the utility.

Chance may be slim, but you never know (after all City beat Utd in the FA cup semi ;) )

I'll give it a look, thanks. Nothing else seems to have gone oddly with my laptop, so I'm not getting too concerned. I only really use IE for testing stuff, and 64bit is basically fine for that. Getting 32bit IE9 working is almost a bit OCD can't have anything not working kind of feeling :)

After trying out that DLL fix in various forms, I'd given up since the last message (since it really didn't bother me much) ... today, I just accidentally clicked to open the 32-bit version. Lo and behold, it worked.

Computers are weird.
