Hardware confilct prevents upgrade!

Recommended Posts

Hi. I wanted to upgrade to Windows XP Professional, but when I started to install, the Upgrade Advisor came up and it gave me a list of some hardware that might not work, like the modem, and some applications that would need to be re-installed, but it also said that Windows XP would not install at all because of a conflict.

The message said "Setup has detected an incompatibility between your video card & computer's mainboard. Because of this, your computer may not start up after the upgrade. Contact the manufacturer of your hardware for technical assistance."

It doesn't make sense though. If there's something conflicting, shouldn't my system be affected right now as well? There's no yellow exclamation marks in Device Manager, so I'm not sure what's wrong, but until that goes away I can't upgrade to Windows XP.

I've got Windows ME right now, and I'm not sure who made the video card or main board. I got this computer through my job and it's from a local computer company. Where can I look in my system properties to get the manufacturer information, ISA vs PCI, etc for my hardware? Has anyone seen this before? Any help would be appreciated!

Thanks,

iUk

Thanks.

I'm new at this, so I've got another question. How do I update the BIOS? :)

I've got an "AWD" file that I downloaded, so what do I do with it. Double clicking it says there's no program associated.

Thanks for your help,

The mobo manufacturer that provided the BIOS update should also provide a program to do the update. For example ASUS provides the program aflash.exe. You will need a DOS bootable floppy with only the system files, the update program, and the .awd file. Boot off of the floppy. Make sure there are no memory management programs running like himem.sys. Run the update program and follow the directions. BE VERY CAREFUL. Read the instructions before you attempt the update because you may not get another chance.
