XP Firewall...

Recommended Posts

Hi, I tryed to use Win XP Firewall and... how do we configure that? Like, I use ICQ and MSN messenger, I can connect, but I can't receive nor send any file! What must I do to make it work? Also, if I'm wanna play game like starcarft, half-life or other thing by internet, is there something to configure? Tnx

not really.. but you can leave ports open for the programs you mentioned. If you're able to connect then you'll be able to send and recieve. if you're talking about sending files over AIM (large ones...) then it takes a while to copy/read the files before sending...

Nope. I connect to Windows Messenger and ICQ with no problem, but I can't send/receive file. In icq, it saying: Unable to established direct connection. For msn, it say something like unable to connect because of firewall, something like that. Wich port I'm suppose to leave open?

There are no ways to make sure you have the required ports open for MSN/Icq, unless you consider setting a large series of ports open which is not likely what you want. The simplest solution now is to disable and send the file, then restart firewall once connection is established. For games, the XP firewall won't be much of a problem. It's 3rd party firewalls that would cause you some grief.

i've posted this up before. so here it is again... just copying it over from the archives. ^_^ if you pay attention to the steps... it also works for DialUp users.

here are the basics.

go to your connection's properties. select the "Advanced" tab. of course if you want to you the builtin XP firewall, make sure it's checked.

to get to the nitty gritty of your TCP/UDP ports, click on "Settings..." at the bottom of the tab.

the "Services" tab is where you get to manually configure your ports. yay. initially only standard ports are listed which you can open like "FTP Server" which is TCP 21.

to open up a port.

+click on "Add..."

+type in a description for the port under "Description of service:"

+type in your computer's name under "Name or IP address of the computer hosting this service on your network:" (you can find this under "Control Panel/System/Computer Name" and look under "Full computer name:" ... just exclude the ending period

+type in the port number you want to open under "External Port number for this service:" (they SHOULD be the same port number for External and Internal)

+finally select the port type (TCP or UDP)

+hit "OK" of course ^_^

to note: if you want to enable Windows Messenger file transfer... you need to unblock TCP port 6891. this allows one file transfer. you can unblock up to TCP port 6901 to allow for 10 simultaneous file transfers.
