AT&T network monitor gadget request

Question

I am a AT&T dsl subscriber for Internet. As you may know, AT&T recently attached a 150GB limit on home dsl subscribers.

My post here is a request for someone to make a Windows 7 Sidebar/desktop gadget that connects with AT&T's network monitoring page. I think it should be easy to do, but I've never done programming.

ATT Usage Monitor (may not be active in your area yet...)

As he mentioned the network monitoring page, I'm pretty sure he is aware of that. I agree though, a gadget would be nice. Too bad the page isn't working for my area yet.

Since they only update the bandwidth daily (and sometimes not even that often) a gadget seems a bit overkill but, hey if you can find one go for it!

I can assure you that no ISP will ever bother creating a gadget as it is in their interest to get you to reach the limit and pay extra fees or force you to upgrade to a more expensive tier.

Best option is to find a freeware app that runs on your taskbar and it will log total download/upload bandwidth consumed per day/week/month. Of course, this is not perfect and will be even more difficult if you have multiple user accounts/devices all leeching bandwidth at the same time. An even more absolute alternative is to use your router to monitor bandwidth usage, but it will require having a compatible router and some hacking.

App on machine only tracks that machine - do you only have 1 machine, then sure that will work.

As mentioned its best to do this tracking on your router.. Get one that does it, use 3rd party firmware that does it, run a router distro on a box as your router and then you could do pretty much anything you wanted.

Here I track my total usage this way on my router.

You could use netflows and send to any sort of netflow analyzer, or grapher say cacti or prtg, etc. You could run munin on the box and graph total traffic that way

example of munin type graph - I don't have this plugin yet, but I graph lots of other things with munin like dns traffic, etc. I think Im going to add this plugin today ;)

with the right tool you can get all kinds of great info

Running on some gadget on you desktop that pulls info from ISP website that only updates once a day or so is pretty lame way to track the traffic in and out of your network. If you want to keep an eye on what is in an out of your network, trusting your ISP to report it -- no thanks I would pass ;)

Those are nice sites, I will be bookmarking them. I have a basic router, so i doubt it has the hacking abilities.

As far as a gadget that pulls info from an ISP, i still want it. I have 1 computer and 3 laptops on wifi.
