Unable to play Blu-Ray movies

Question

I just got an HP Blu-Ray/DVD-R Combo Drive yesterday. It seems to be working great, but for some reason I am not able to play any Blu-Ray movies on it. It came with Power DVD 8, and when I insert the disc I get an error which says that my system is not HDCP compliant. I find this extremely difficult to believe. I have a brand new LG 23" 1080p monitor which is connecting to 2 Radeon 5870's in Crossfiire with the newly released Catalyst 11.5 drivers and the latest CAP profiles. I am using a DVI cable (which I believe to be dual link). Can anyone think of a reason why the software would be telling me that my machine isn't HDCP compliant? Could this be a driver issue, or an issue with the cable, or a driver issue? Is there a way to confirm within the Catalyst Control Center that HDCP is indeed working?

The monitor does have an HDMI input, which I have not tried yet. I'd rather continue to use the DVI cable if at all possible as the HDMI port on the monitor is in a rather odd spot on the side of the monitor instead of next to the DVI port.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Use the HDMI connection.

Try running this and see what it says.

Yeah. That's what I ran and that's where I got the information saying that my setup wasn't HDCP compliant. I'll try the HDMI connection and see what happens with that.

Thanks.

For what it's worth, you could also override the HDCP compliant error by running AnyDVD HD in the background. It'll allow PowerDVD to play Blu Rays regardless of your HDCP compatibility.

That's what I do here (I get the same HDCP error using Nero MediaHub, probably b/c I'm using DVI cables but never really bothered to figure it out yet).

check to see if the monitor is HDCP Compliant, its a form of Copy Protection, if its not, your SOL unless you get a new monitor that supports HDCP i think

Try HDMI connection first as other have said. Your system is HDCP compliant as you stated.

If you can afford it, get ArcSoft TotalMedia Theatre.

It is the best for Blu-ray playback and also blends nicely with Windows Media Center.

Its sad that the bundled software that comes with blu-ray players (and other hardware for that matter) is so outdated. PowerDVD is now at version 11!

The monitor is definitley HDCP compliant. This is the monitor that I have: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824005181 With these specs I highly doubt the monitor wouldn't support it. I don't think there any flat panels out there that don't support it.

Anyway. I am going to try the HDMI connection and I may try they Any DVD HD trick. I don't intend on watching ALOT of Blu Ray movies, but when I want to watch one, I don't want to have to jump through hoops.

yea your monitor is HDCP acording to the spec's it lists HDCP as yes.

only other thing i can think of would be the cable, as far as hoops, thats Blu-Ray

I think everything after 2006 is HDCP compliant. I wouldn't worry about your monitor / drive.

What type of DVI cable are you using? there are a few different kinds. Click here to see what type you have. Could narrow down your problem.

I switched to the HDMI cable and that resolved the Blu-Ray playback issue. However, in doing so, thatstarted another issue. I have a 120hz monitor. Hooking up the HDMI cable makes it run at only 60hz, and nothing that I do will allow me set it at 120hz. That won't work. I do have the monitor driver installed, so I don't believe it's that. It might just be a crappy HDMI cable. I think I have some better ones laying around. Andrew Lyle mentioned checking the type of DVI cable that I have. I did this, and the cable is definitely a DVI-D Dual Link. So theoretically, this cable should be able to handle the HDCP without an issue.

I also did the Any DVD HD trick. That worked like a charm. So if I can't get it working right with the HDMI, I might just do that. This way my monitor works the way it should and I can play my movies without an issue.

I'll keep you all posted. Thanks for the help so far.

I thought I'd post an update on this for those that gave their suggestions. It appears the issue may have been some sort of weird ATI issue with respect to DVI. I got a GTX 570 in a trade involving the 5870 and lo and behold Blu-Ray playback works like a charm over DVI now. I'm not sure what it was, but it now works. Thanks to all for the suggestions.
