Ablock Blocking spyware popups

Question

I had Adblock installed on my server and it worked perfect! The only problem I found is it was blocking ads/popups which was part of some kind of malware/spyware.

I understand you can configure Adblock to block malware if configured. Has anyone else done this? I did not have this setup and now wish I did as Malwarebytes attempted to remove what it detected and the system was unable to boot. If I had this setup in the first place I may have avoided gettin the spyware/malware installed in the first place.

I only noticed the machine was infected after a fake login appeared for a banking site which looked exactly the same. I attempted to block it with AdBlock thinking it was a popup then realised how dumb that was, of course it didnt work as it was a seperate app running and not chrome/firefox. I looked about the system and noticed a few folders I had not created with links to sites and general junk. Should of noticed these earlier but they wern't in obvious places really.

Suppose I deserve it after being careless and only using ClamAV for virus protection which don't even do live protection. Im sure

other people have felt stingey like me and renewed their AV protection (Had AVG server edition previously). It may not of even been my carelessness someone could

of exploited it or anything! As it wouldnt boot it pi**ed me off so I decided to try Ubuntu Server.. Well Im stuck there at the

moment haha! Cant even investigate now due to frustration I lost data also, I retrieved most of the files though which Im happy with :-)

What are others opinion of Ad Block? Its great for blocking ads but it my case actually caused me to not realise an infection. Who knows how long it was there! Cancelled all bank cards in case, now trying to lock down my Win 7 machine fully!! Makes you paranoid thinking someones gonna take a mortgage out in my name ahha!

Ad Muncher is the best ad blocker that you can use, it's not free but definitely worth the money.

Looks good actually anyone else use this? How long have you used it Oz? Did you use Ad Blocker before? I'm reluctant to setup a server again now I didn't use it for much really as well was trying to learn abit of my job. Was using it for a while to watch flash videos as flash would just NOT work with my main PC Chrome Firefox IE it always crashed. Seems my GPU had issues which after using basic drivers for months to keep the system stable I just updated now it works! I have enough headaches with computers at work let alone at home.

I'm thinking MAC, windows always gonna have viruses etc just gonna get worse..

Admuncher is great other than you have to buy a license per machine. For a one time fee for all your machines I guess the price is worth paying, but it's not worth paying it per machine.

Hey witalit, I have been using Ad Muncher since 2007ish. It is the perfect solution to ads. Works on all the major browsers. It is extremely fast. It has very light memory usage (16MB right now). It allows you to customize exactly what you do or do not want.

Doubtful, but this program is seriously too great to go unnoticed. I will be honest by saying this is among the small group of programs I actually pay for (meaning I use free alternatives, not pirated copies).

A super happy AdMuncher user since 2008. One of my trepidations of going to Macs was no AdMuncher. Hopefully soon. Having to use the ad blocking browser extensions really lets you see how great AdMuncher is.

Yeah this is kinda annoying I guess its because if you need it on additional machines and your paying for a license this covers the support if any for each machine.

Sounds really slick! Ad Blocker did quite a good job I just wished I looked more at what it was blocking and scanned my server for malware/spyware on a regular basis.

Seems a few people have used it for a couple years now which is good to hear it must only be getting better!

AdBlock Plus + Easylist work great for me for many years and it's free. I don't really need anything else....

Hmmm I may think of this combo as it is a free alternative but as you can see already free alternatives haven't worked out for me. Im looking for something to protect my main machine now as I don't want to do through this drama again of wasting time and losing data. I currently have Ad Blocker (Subscribed to malware domains) + Avast AV + Spybot Search and Destroy with live protection. This sounds like a good combo to me to prevent any nasties installing on my machine. I have not had any real issues with infections on this machine but some sites trying to infect but then blocked by Avast which is great.

I've been using Ad-Muncher for at least 3 maybe 4 years now. I won't use anything else. Period. Best there is. Daily whitelist/blacklist updates (if not more than once a day to boot!). It's the shiz.

Ah well this is tempting! I have a couple of PC's I would need to protect so may be pricey.

What do people use for Spyware/Malware? I need some great real-time protection for this as well. I am currently using Avast & Spybot Search & Destroy (just installed), is there anything better? I understand Avast standard version is free so not sure if this is the best option. I am heading towards all paid protection as they seem to perform better. I understand not to be clicking on dodgy links but you can always make mistakes, computers frustrate me sometimes when they don't work like that should haha!

I have not seen any ads in videos on news sites youtube local news sites etc... Using EasyList

I have with even Easylist for adblock. Though it works well on blocking youtube video ads. The difference for me with Ad Muncher is it blocks video ads no matter where they come from. It doesn't have to be youtube, a local news site, or whatever.

Though I think the biggest difference is it blocks ads in all programs not just browsers. That and if you use more than one browser it is a godsend. Like for example there is no other way to disable google instant, webpage preview or any of the other stupid stuff with Internet Explorer. So this i really there only chose that I know of. Firefox, Opera, Chrome not so much. Though your right who uses IE? I sure don't.

+1

...not to say that it's very easy to create custom filters.

It doesn't block ads on your news website before a video play though. It may on cnn though not sure. Ad Muncher does.

Another + for admuncher. well worth the money.

i've been using it for over a year now, and love it. couldnt imagine being online without it.

Definitely worth the money and been using it for close to 3 years now. The best part it is not just a internet browser ad blocker!

Yes it does.

MSNBC/CNN/FoxNews.

AdblockPlus + EasyList works.

I don't think it blocks ad's on videos from sites like Hulu though.

That why I said it may block ads on cnn though not sure lol. It doesn't block the ads playing before on my local news site I tried before. Why does AdBlock Plus not work on Hulu but Youtube? That is strange.
