SniperWulf
I have 2 hard drives, a 60 gig and a 40 gig. They are both 7400 rpm. I also have 640 megs of ram. What should my virtual memory settings be? thanks!
Intelligen
Dude just let windows manage your virtual memory. And if your using a NT kernel based OS then don't worry about it.
MxxCon
set it to fixed size so it doesn't resize needlessly something like 500mb should be enough might want to also movie it to non-system drive, but it doesn't really matter
aco Veteran Posted January 7, 2002 Veteran Share Posted January 7, 2002 It is recommended by Microsoft (if you have two HD's) that you keep the page file on a drive which does not have Windows installed on it, as MxxCon has said. I too have 640MB RAM and a 180MB pagefile is more than enough for me.
Stingray
Put a PERMANENT swap file on your NON-SYSTEM hard drive. This WILL improve your performance, even if you don?t notice it much. However, the size of the swap file is another matter. If you are a normal PC user (browsing, a little image editing, word processing and some gaming) I would recommend a permanent swap file between 256Mb and 512Mb. If you use some special program that requires big files to be processed, you should reconsider these values.

If you were running Windows Me or 98 then the story would be different.
SniperWulf
I decided to use a system managed file on my 2nd hd and the hd with Windows no page file.

Roger H. Veteran Posted January 7, 2002 Veteran Share Posted January 7, 2002 you don't need any virtual ram. If you have more than 512MB and ram and don't use any programs that use v-ram then i suggest turning it off. Adobe Photoshop uses it and couple more programs so if you don't use those then just turn it off..
baphomet_irl Veteran Posted January 7, 2002 Veteran Share Posted January 7, 2002 as a rule fo thumb ur pagefile should be 150% of ur RAM - so go for sumthin like 768MB (min and max)
mortensen
Mine is set to 500mb... it's not always possible to use the 150% of your RAM rule because some games need a set amount [300mb is an absolute minimum for a gamer].
