Currently I have several 1080p MKV videos I was thinking about getting a Roku and playing the video's via a USB hard drive on my mini-van TV which is 480 resolution is that possible or will there be a problem?

I'm not sure Roku plays MKV files, the WD Live ones do however.

This is basically the only reason stopping me from getting a Roku! :(

Well you still did not answer the question," will it resize a 1080p movie to 480 without problems?"

Also they recently started to support mkv files over usb.

Yeah, I see that's the case now. How are you connecting to the TV though? Via HDMI or Component? It shouldn't matter as the TV can take the signal and rescale it to match the display resolution anyways. Lots of LCDs are 1366 x 768 but they'll take 480, 720p or 1080p and rescale it to match the LCD's native resolution.

Since you mentioned 480 i'm guessing you'll be using component cables then which also shouldn't matter. The Roku box should have options as to what mode to display in, 480-1080p.

Side note - they are getting better :) Now just add network share playback and it'll be perfect!!
