Those living in the United Kingdom could be about to get a big boost in mobile network performance over the next few months. EE, the largest carrier in the UK, today announced that it will be enabling "superfast" 4G connections through airwaves previously used for 3G.
The upgrade will be taking place over the next six months and affect more than 500 mobile communications towers. More specifically, the carrier will be upgrading the 2100 MHz spectrum of the towers from 3G to 4G, resulting in a total of five spectrums of 4G connectivity in the upgraded locations. This is more than any other operator in the region, according to the announcement.
Unsurprisingly, EE says the usage of 3G networks has been declining, and so it makes sense for this upgrade to be done. The targeted areas are the ones where there's a higher demand for faster networks, such as areas around London, Manchester, and other major cities throughout the UK.
The impending arrival of 5G networks hasn't gone unnoticed to the carrier, however, and this move will also help the deployment of the technology as early as next year. The new networks will be installed on top of the upgraded locations in the busiest regions.
