AMD Quietly Slashes Desktop Processor Prices

Under pressure from Intel's Core 2-series, Advanced Micro Devices has quietly slashed prices on its desktop microprocessors for the second time in the last month. The price slash varies from 3% to 45% with the majority of products losing from 8% to 20%. AMD made sure to focus on the Athlon 64 X2 family of dual-core processors and cut the price of the high-end models quite aggressively. For instance, the Athlon 64 X2 5600+ can now be acquired for $326 in 1000-unit quantities (35% reduction) while the 5400+ now costs $267 in 1000-unit quantities (45% reduction). As usual, AMD did not release any statements regarding reasons for the price changes. One could argue that the formal introduction of the Athlon 64 X2 processor 6000+ ($500) is a possible cause.
