WE FINALLY HEARD back from AMD about rumours it had, or would lay off 20 per cent of its staff. It hasn't made any cuts yet, but that's certainly not to say it won't.
That's strengthened by a report on today's San Jose Mercury News, which has managed to talk to Hector Ruiz, the firm's CEO, who confirmed a "strategic transformation" is in the offing at AMD.
The Mercury News, in an article titled "AMD planning a major restructure likely to include large scale layoffs", the paper quotes industry analysts as saying AMD is expected to lay off another 10 to per cent of its current workforce of 13,000.
But whether AMD will announce these cuts in a conference call later this week is still unclear, the same paper reports. The report adds that AMD has pulled in consulting firm McKinsey to examine ways in which the transformation has come about, and it adds that there's even talk of relocating the HQ from Sunnyvale to Austin.
Everything appears to be up in the air, so it appears we'll know some of the answers to the questions – at least – when the conference call starts playing.
