Android 5.1 Lollipop is available now on a handful of new Android One devices

The newest version of Android, 5.0.x Lollipop, was officially announced back in November, but it has so far made it on to just 1.6% of devices. Numerous issues in the earliest Lollipop builds left manufacturers waiting for fixes from Google, and - as HTC noted this week - this has held up development, testing and rollout of the update.

But while many devices around the world are now being lined up to receive the Android 5.0.2 release, Google is already forging ahead with the next version. The company officially confirmed Android 5.1 on its Indonesia site, although it has not made a public announcement about the new release yet.

As Android Police reports, several references to the new OS version were spotted less than 24 hours ago on the site, and included mentions of Android 5.1 coming pre-installed on three new Android One devices: the Evercoss One X, Mito Impact and Nexian Journey.

These handsets went on sale there today, and customers who have purchased them have confirmed that they do indeed come with Android 5.1 onboard.

No official changelog has yet been published for Android 5.1, but given that devices running the latest OS version are now out in the wild - albeit only in Indonesia, for now - it shouldn't be too much longer before we find out everything we need to know about it.
