Following today's announcement by HTC and Vodafone that they are to make and sell only the second mass-market smartphone device powered by Google's Android operating mobile system, several more manufacturers have now entered the frame and revealed their future plans to produce devices running Android.
LG are to update their existing KS360 model to run Android with the updated handset available from this summer. The phone should have the same specifications as the current model, including a slide-out QWERTY keyboard and 2.0 megapixel camera. The company also plans to release two more Android powered phones this year, marketing manager Jeremy Newing said.
Engadget reports that Acer are also working two Android powered phones for launch some time this year. Apparently an Acer rep inadvertently showed the Spanish version of Engadget their product roadmap in his notebook, exposing plans for two "secret models" running the Android OS.
Chinese company Huawei has announced that its first Android devices should be available in the third quarter of 2009. There are currently few details about the actual phone as it is still in development, but it is said to have large similarities with the iPhone. The company aims to start selling two or three phones running Android in the not too distant future and introduce even more models next year.
Further more, Vodafone and HTC plan to produce more Android devices together in the future, according to TechRadar. "[This] announcement, presents the culmination of the relationship between HTC and Vodafone, and we're looking forward to introducing even more products in the future," revealed Peter Chou, the CEO of HTC. Patrick Chomet, the global director of terminals at Vodafone, added "We're really pleased to have the HTC Magic, and we'll continue to work hard with HTC and Google to develop and recognise the potential of platform; we're really excited by the quality of the experience."
However, there is still no more news from Motorola and Kogan who have both previously announced that they are producing Android powered phones.
