Various providers currently support a multitude of iOS apps for consuming their content as part of their subscription offerings. Up until now, customers have been required to log in to each and every app available with credentials.
According to a support document published by Apple today, however, single sign-on is now available for United States customers of certain cable and satellite television networks.
The company has been working on a single sign-on solution for iOS / Apple TV (4th gen) which is designed to store your subscription details securely on your Apple device, allowing you to then login with those stored credentials inside compatible iOS apps without the need to sign in multiple times across multiple apps.
The new feature is live today on iOS and tvOS devices, and doesn't require a software update so long as you're already running the latest major versions of the operating systems.
On iOS, the single sign on options are available via;
Settings > TV Provider
On Apple TV (4th gen), the same is available via;
Settings > Accounts > TV Provider
The following providers are currently supported by the service;
- CenturyLink Prism
- DirecTV
- Dish
- GVTC
- GTA
- Hawaiian Telcom
- Hotwire
- MetroCast
- Sling
Of course, not all apps have been updated yet to support it, but the following list support the service already;
