Battlefield 2042's Portal mode mashes together Battlefield 3, Bad Company 2, and 1942

The EA Play Live showcase today gave another look at Battlefield 2042, specifically its ambitious new game mode that's titled Battlefield Portal. Sticking true to its name, the mode will transport players back to older Battlefield entries to re-experience their most popular maps, but with a twist. Ripple Effect Studios, formerly DICE Los Angeles, is developing this sandbox.

Battlefield Portal will let players create rounds with any game mode they prefer, and then mash together armies from any of the available games' eras, even pitting WW2 armies against 2042 operatives, with every weapon and vehicle settings available for tweaking.

In addition to all the content from Battlefield 2042, Portal will include six fan favorite maps from Battlefield 1942, Battlefield 3, and Battlefield Bad Company 2, them being Caspian Border, Noshahr Canals, Battle of the Bulge, El Alamein, Valparaiso, and Arica Harbor. The classic games' weapons, vehicles, and gadgets will be available too.

These maps and assets of the classic games have been rebuilt on the latest Frostbite engine for graphics and physics overhauls, but without changing too much of the landscape and art styles.

Now, more interestingly, the player that's crafting the experience can dive deeper to adjust their custom match with an official rule editor with visual scripting capabilities. This will allow adding custom rules, essentially programming match types straight into the game, and then sharing these creations with the community. These could range from creating game modes like Gun Game to an all-out battle between tanks and robots.

Ripple Effect plans to add more content to Battlefield 2042's Portal mode post-launch for players to tinker with as well, so we could see more classic maps being added in the future, perhaps from the missing games Battlefield 2, 2142, and 4.

Battlefield 2042 has an October 22 launch date attached to it. The title is coming to PC, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, PlayStation 5, and PlayStation 4. DICE still has one more major game mode unveiling left, something with the name Hazard Zone, which will be announced at a later date.
