Elder Scrolls publisher Bethesda Softworks has admitted it is the latest game company to deal with a cyber attack on its servers. The company's official blog site has posted word today that, "over the past weekend, a hacker group attempted an unlawful intrusion of our websites to gain access to data." The blog post adds that no personal info or financial info is believed to be exposed as part of this attack. However it added, " ... the hackers may have gained access to some user names, email addresses, and/or passwords."
The blog site states that as a precaution, people should change the passwords for the accounts they have on any Bethesda Softworks-owned site. That includes the recently launched game statistics web page for the recent first person shooter Brink. It adds, "We regret any inconvenience that these attacks on us cause for you. These attacks will be evaluated to determine if there are any additional protections we might take that would be prudent."
This is just the latest cyber attack against a game developer or publisher in the past couple of months. Confirmed cyber attacks on Nintendo (both America and Europe), Epic Games, Square Enix and others have been reported. The most serious attacks have occurred at Sony's Playstation Network which shut down for a month after a cyber attack on April 20. More recently, UK-based Codemasters suffered an attack that has caused the publisher to shut down its company web site and divert all its traffic to its Facebook web page.
