Bose announces new wireless open earbuds aimed at sports enthusiasts

Bose today announced a new pair of wireless earbuds designed with an audio enclosure that doesn't touch or cover your ears when worn. That's because the new Bose Sport Open Earbuds have an open rather than in-ear design, built for sports and workouts.

The earbuds feature Bluetooth 5.1 and incorporate Bose's OpenAudio technology that allows you to listen to music while the audio enclosure sits above instead of over, in or on the ear canal. The enclosure is held in place by a contoured ear hook that attaches around your ear.

Bose promises that you can still hear your playlists and calls while others can't "even at high volumes". However, they won't block out ambient noise. Mehul Trivedi, category director of Bose wearable audio, has this to say:

“Runners and cyclists have been asking us for headphones that let them stay focused on their performance without wires, neckbands, or having to pop out a bud to hear traffic, a training partner, nature, or anything else they don’t want to miss. Our new Sport Open Earbuds solve all these problems — and they’re the only earbuds that do.”

The company also claims that the earbuds will “stay precisely positioned while resisting sweat, heat, rain and snow". They have an IPX4 water resistant rating and weigh 14 grams per bud. Their battery can last up to eight hours.

Bose also says the earbuds' microphone system isolates your voice from wind and noise. The left button lets you access your voice assistant and the one on the right is used to power on and off, play, pause, and skip songs as well as manage calls.

The earbuds are available in Triple Black for $199.95. You can pre-order them starting today via Bose.com and BestBuy.com, with shipping scheduled in mid-January along with a protective carrying case, charging base, and the Bose Music app with support for iOS and Android devices.
