Cabin in the Woods had plans for Left 4 Dead 2 DLC pack

Cabin in the Woods, the recent horror film co-written by Joss Whedon and Drew Goddard, is now out on DVD and Blu-Ray. Goddard, who also directed the film that takes the teenage horror slasher genre in a very new direction, recently went on Reddit in a AMA session and revealed that, at one time, they were working with Valve to make a DLC pack for Left 4 Dead 2 that would have tied into the movie.

The Reddit AMA session had Goddard admit (spoiler warning!):

... the game was gonna be amazing. You were gonna be able to play in both the upstairs "Cabin in the Woods" world and the downstairs "facility" world with all the monsters. Believe me, I HATE all video games based on movies, they always suck, but porting Cabin into Left For Dead felt like the right fit.

So what happened? Cabin in the Woods was filmed back in 2009 for MGM, but the studio later hit some major financial problems which caused the film to be delayed and then later sold off to Lionsgate, who finally released it to theaters in April. The delay caused the cancellation of the Left 4 Dead 2 DLC pack.

Goddard did admit that Valve allowed the filmmakers to "borrow" some of the Left 4 Dead monsters which appear in the final movie.
