CNN to become the latest to retire its Windows Phone app

CNN will be the latest to fold its app for Windows Phones this month. The app is set to stop working on July 18.

The app is no longer searchable in the Windows Store; however, you can still grab it through the My Library section, assuming that you've owned it before. The Windows version of the app can also no longer be found in the Store; however, downloading and running CNN App for Windows will display no such message.

CNN is certainly not the first to walk away from Windows phones. A week after the app stops working on July 25, so will Amazon App. PayPal stopped working on June 30, but users have reported seeing messages that the payments company is working on something new.

Many companies are ditching their Windows Phone 8.1 apps in favor of Microsoft's new Universal Windows Platform (UWP) apps, which would allow them to take advantage of Windows' PC market share while still adapting to other form factors, such as phones. Wells Fargo is an example of a company that adopted this strategy.

We've reached out to CNN to see if the company is working on a Windows 10 version of its app, or if it has any future plans for the Windows platform. We'll let you know if we hear anything, but in the meantime, you can use the browser to find CNN.
