DLC for Friday the 13th have been canceled due to copyright issues

Friday the 13th: The Game was released more than a year ago to consoles and PCs. The multiplayer game was developed by IllFonic and published by Gun Media. Although it received a lukewarm response at launch due to bugs and server issues, the game quickly rose to popularity once regular updates were released to address major problems.

However, avid fans of the game will be extremely disappointed to hear that all future DLC have been canceled.

This abrupt move apparently stems from a licensing issue regarding the movies, so it's not even directly related to the game. Apparently, there's a lawsuit between Victor Miller - the writer of the original film - and Sean Cunningham, who directed the movie and agreed to a licensing deal for the game. Cunningham believes that he has rights to the character and that Miller was just a paid-for-hire employee. Miller, on the other hand, has stated that he possesses the rights to Jason Voorhees. You can check out all the murky details in some court documents here.

Gun Media states that a ruling for the legal battle was expected in October 2017, but since this hasn't happened, the future of Friday the 13th: The Game is in limbo. As a result, the developer and publisher cannot release any more content for the game until a decision is announced, which may take an indefinite amount of time. Gun Media says that:

When we originally learned that the game fell within the crosshairs of this legal dispute, we tried to balance the creation of new content requested by our fans against the maintenance and bug fixing that our community expects and deserves. We attempted to do both within the limits of the legal case.

We’ve now been forced to accept that the lawsuit makes future content for the game, including alternate play modes, new playable Jasons and Counselors, and new maps, unfeasible now or in the future. Although the listed content types will be affected, we remain committed to launching dedicated servers on our console platforms and providing the continued maintenance and bug fixing important to supporting our fan base.

Finally, the publisher has explicitly stated that all future DLC for Friday the 13th: The Game have been canceled. This includes "Uber Jason", Jason Kill Packs, new counselors, emotes, clothing, and the Grendel map. However, the developer will continue to work on maintenance and dedicated servers for the game.
