EA confirms new Need For Speed game for 2012 release

Electronic Arts talked about its financial situation today and in the process revealed that a new game in a long running franchise is in the works for release later this year. In the company's slideshow presentation, it showed that a new Need For Speed game will be released sometime in the fourth quarter of 2012. This would be the 19th major game in the franchise.

No other details about the game were revealed. However, it is par for the course for EA to release a new game in the racing series every year. Last year's entry was Need For Speed: The Run. Developed by the publisher's Black Box team, it used the same graphics engine as the first person shooter Battlefield 3. However, reviews of the game were mediocre.

A South African-based game retailer, BTGames, did post a pre-order link to a game titled Need for Speed: Most Wanted 2 recently, but that listing was later deleted. The original Need for Speed: Most Wanted, released in 2005, was one of the Xbox 360's launch titles and focused on street racing. It's likely that EA will reveal more information about the new Need For Speed game during its pre-E3 2012 press conference in Los Angeles on June 6th.
