Epic Games reveals Fortnite

Epic Games promised earlier this week that their next game reveal would be something quite different for the developer behind the Unreal and Gears of War shooter franchises. On Saturday the company officially revealed that game via a trailer at the Spike TV Video Game Awards. The game itself is called Fortnite and it looks to be a mix of strategy, adventure and action.

The trailer, which doesn't appear to show actual gameplay, sets up the premise of Fortnite. Officially Epic Games is saying that Fortnite is " ... an expansive original world that invites players to be creative, resourceful and collaborative by day and defend their prized fortress by night ... all utilizing the latest Unreal Engine technology."

The object of the game is apparently to build up your fortress with defenses and other items during the daylight hours. At night, the monsters come out to attack and you have to make sure your fortress remains intact. The gameplay trailer shows a more cartoony art style to Fortnite as opposed to the more realistic looking games in the Unreal and Gears of War franchise.

Forbes.com reveals that Fortnite is still searching for a publisher so it may be a while before the game is actually released. Fortnite is just one of five game projects that Epic is currently working on; the other four games have yet to be revealed.

While Epic has had a lot of success with the Unreal and Gears of War series, and its Infinity Blade games for the iOS devices have also been huge hits, their recent first person shooter Bulletstorm (co-developed with People Can Fly) was a sales disappointment despite generally good reviews.
