It was back in March of 2017 that Android co-founder Andy Rubin revealed that he would be putting his energy into his new startup called Essential. Along with the news, he also tweeted a teaser picture of a phone that would come to be known as the PH-1. Despite offering top-notch specifications and premium materials, the phone never became a hot seller at its original price, only finding sales success when heavily discounted.
Despite there being rumors that the firm was being sold off and the successor to the PH-1 being canceled, the company has now confirmed that it is actively working on its next mobile product. The news comes from Essential speaking with 9to5Google with regards to its own website and other retailers being out of stock of the phone.
The firm states:
"We are sold out of Essential Phone on essential.com and won’t be adding any new inventory. We are now hard at work on our next mobile product and will continue to sell accessories and provide speedy software updates and customer support to our existing community."
A couple months back we heard rumors of a successor that would lean heavily into AI. While this could be interesting, let's hope that the new device will also offer an improved camera experience over its predecessor.
