Fast ring Office Insiders finally get a new build for Windows desktop

A week ago, someone reported in the Microsoft Community that his Office Insider PC in the Slow ring actually had a higher build number than the one in the Fast ring. The company responded the next day, saying that there was an issue that was preventing it from updating the Fast ring, which was on build 8117.xxxx, and that issue didn't affect Slow ring users.

Today, Microsoft has finally released a new Office Insider build to Fast users, bringing the build number to 8201.2025, which is the same as what's currently available in Slow. In fact, the build was offered to the Slow ring a week ago, containing mostly improvements for Excel and Outlook:

Here's what's new for Excel 2016:

  • Enhanced data import functionality Easily import and shape data from various sources. Manage workbook queries and connection with the Queries & Connection side pane, and share queries with others via ODC files.

  • Keep the copy Copy your cells and , before you paste, you can still do other tasks like typing or inserting cells.

  • New data transformation: Add Column From Examples In the Query Editor, create a new column by providing sample values. As you type, Excel detects the required transformations and shows a preview of the new column.

Here's what's new in Outlook 2016:

  • Improved attachment options When attaching files to an email, you can more easily select whether to add it as a cloud file or as a traditional attachment.
  • Quickly access the groups you use the most Groups you're most likely to interact with now appear at the top of the list.

There was also one new feature in PowerPoint, which is that you can add closed captions to videos in presentations.

Microsoft also noted that while the build number may have been lower in the Fast ring than in Slow, Fast might still have some additional features. The firm says that there's "more raw code" that might not make it to other rings.
