The Fedora Project has just announced the availability of Fedora 32. One of the biggest changes in this update is the inclusion of GNOME 3.36 which includes “great” improvements such as a slick new lock screen. According to the project, Fedora 32 Workstation focuses on the desktop and is particularly geared towards software developers who want something that works out of the box.
Aside from the Workstation edition, people can now download Fedora Server – aimed at system admins that want an easy-to-deploy solution, Fedora IoT – which provides a strong foundation of Internet of Things ecosystems, and Fedora CoreOS – an automatically updating, minimal operating system for running containerized workloads securely at scale. There are also a number of Fedora Spins and Labs which target specific users.
No matter which edition of Fedora 32 you opt for, all of them have the same software packages available for download. Like previous releases, Fedora 32 ships with some of the most up-to-date software, some examples include GCC 10, Ruby 2.7, and Python 3.8. The project said that Python 2 has now mostly been removed from Fedora as it has passed end-of-life. For those who still rely on Python 2, a legacy python27 package is provided.
Another interesting change concerns low-memory situations, Fedora 32 includes the EarlyOOM service which detects when you’re running out of memory and issues a command to end the program using the most resources. This feature allows the system to recover from out of memory situations sooner rather than experience a complete system hang where the user is forced to switch the machine off and back on again.
