It has been a little over a decade since Apple opened its iconic Fifth Avenue store in New York. The flagship store is mostly underground with the entrance being enclosed by a 32-foot glass cube that resides above ground. According to sources, the store will begin its 45,000 square foot expansion plans in May that will require the exterior glass to be dismantled.
Although dismantling the cube will be a huge project that will reportedly cost $2 million, it isn't the first time Apple has had to take down the cube. The first time occurred in 2011 when the firm revamped the exterior glass panels reducing it from over 90 panels to just 15 panels for a much cleaner look. For its new renovation, the store will grow to more than double its current size, from 32,000 square feet to 77,000 square feet.
For those wondering, the Fifth Avenue location will be closed during the renovation and Apple has temporarily located only a few steps away to the former location that housed FAO Schwarz.
