Firefox Quantum set to be renamed to Firefox Browser

Mozilla is planning to drop the name ‘Quantum’ from its web browser, Firefox. The ‘Quantum’ brand name has been around ever since 2017 when the firm overhauled the browser’s innards to enhance its performance. Mozilla has been referring to its browser as Firefox Quantum since version 57 came out, but from version 70 onwards, due in October, it will carry the name Firefox Browser.

In addition to the name change, Firefox 70 is expected to ship with the new logo that was unveiled earlier this year. The latest Firefox nightly build has recently started shipping with the new logo, suggesting it will also come to the final release in October.

While most people refer to Mozilla’s browser simply as ‘Firefox’ the firm has opted to go with the full name Firefox Browser when it comes to branding the product. The reason for this is that the Firefox brand is bigger than just the browser as it includes Firefox Send, Firefox Monitor, and Firefox Lockwise. The firm also acquired Pocket back in 2017 which lets you save articles to read later; while this product doesn’t carry the Firefox brand name it certainly could in the future.

Firefox 70 is still a little while off yet, the plan is to graduate it to the beta channel on September 3 before it’s finally released on October 22. The update will bundle Firefox Lockwise, replacing the password manager and the new tab page will ask new users to sign up to Firefox Monitor alerts too.
