First 24: Hands-on with the LG G5

It was only a couple of weeks ago that LG announced its latest flagship, the LG G5. While the design of the G5 will be subjective, it is without a doubt that the company is pushing in a completely different direction from the rest of the industry. By introducing the 'modular marvel', LG has positioned the G5 to become of the more unique flagship handsets for 2016.

The G5 is different than its predecessor, swapping plastic for metal. Although the G5 isn't flashy by any means, it still exudes quality with a simple design and premium feel. The chin of the device can be unlocked, revealing the battery and can be swapped with different modular components for future expansion.

The 5.3-inch Quad HD IPS LCD display offers excellent colors and viewing angles. Although the G5 does offer a LED indicator for messages and other notifications, LG has also opted for an always-on display, that can show your notifications on screen as well. While having the screen on at all times might sound taxing, according to LG, the feature only sips 0.8% of battery life per hour. Luckily, if you don't want or like the feature, you can always disable it in the display settings.

Perhaps one of the more welcome changes to the G5 is the repositioning of the volume rocker. Since the G2 (2013), LG has positioned the power button and volume rocker on the back of its G-series devices. Although this was a good idea since the index finger naturally rests in that general area, in practicality, it was always a little tricky to use. Luckily, for the G5, LG has moved the volume rocker to the side of the device, making it feel more natural and comfortable when raising and lowering the volume. The power button still remains on the back, that also doubles as a fingerprint reader.

As for the rest - that remains to be seen - as this is just the first day with LG's G5. Be prepared as there will be more to come this week, as we explore the latest from LG.
