Google has announced a couple of new languages for its Google Assistant. Support for the languages will initially be coming to Android 6.0+ but will arrive on iOS devices in due course. The two new languages are Italian for people in Italy, and Spanish for people in the U.S., Mexico, and Spain - it looks like Spanish speaking nations in Central and South America are out of luck for the time being.
In a blog post, the Google Assistant Program Manager, Eugene Chow, said:
“Our goal is for the Assistant to be available to help you get things done, no matter what language you speak, what device you’re using or what question you’re asking. Today’s update is another step in that direction, as these new languages join English in Australia, Canada, U.S. and UK; Portuguese in Brazil, French in Canada and France; German in Germany; Japanese in Japan; and Korean in Korea.”
Chow also confirmed the rollout schedule for the new languages saying that users will be able to use the languages over the coming weeks but that they’ll arrive on eligible Android 6.0+ devices first and later in the year become available to iPhone users too. Google Home devices were not mentioned in the post.
