Google Docs (along with Sheets and Slides) has come a long way in terms of providing an alternative to Microsoft Word in the productivity space. Google's productivity suite even added support for editing Microsoft Office files on mobile last year without requiring you to convert these documents into a format that's compatible with Docs, Sheets, and Slides.
Those are some of the more basic capabilities, however, and Google's web apps have not always been on par with their Microsoft counterparts when it comes to the more advanced features. One example is the ability to insert images in front of or behind text, something that Word has had for decades. That's changing today, though, with a new update that Google is rolling out to Docs.
The productivity tool now lets you put an image above or behind text, with the ability to keep this formatting when you import or export documents from Word. The new option can be accessed within the image options sidebar. Alternatively, you'll see it in the image toolbar when you click directly on an image.
Docs' new feature is available to customers with Workspace Essentials, Business Starter, Business Standard, Business Plus, Enterprise Essentials, Enterprise Standard, and Enterprise Plus subscriptions from today. It's also live for G Suite Basic, Business, Education, Enterprise for Education, and Nonprofits customers as well as for personal Google accounts. It will take up to 15 days, though, before it arrives for everyone.
