Earlier today, Facebook announced that it would freeze donations to political action committees (PACs) at least through the first quarter of 2021, followed by Microsoft's similar action. Now, it seems that Google has also followed suit.
Business Insider reports that Google has decided to suspend all political contributions following the U.S. Capitol siege on January 6 meant to stop lawmakers from certifying the presidential win of Joe Biden. The search giant is freezing "all NetPAC political contributions" while it is re-evaluating its policies on this type of spending, according to Jose Castaneda, a Google representative.
It's the same action that Facebook is taking in regard to its political spending practices. Unlike Microsoft and Google, however, the social media giant may not necessarily suspend all political spending since its decision pertains only to PAC donations.
Last week's violent events led many tech giants to take action to help prevent further violence and attack on the U.S. Congress. Twitter, for its part, permanently suspended the account of Donald Trump while Google and Apple removed the Parler app from the Play Store and App Store, respectively, for its failure to moderate content that could incite violence.
