Earlier today, we reported that Mozilla had unleashed the latest version of its browser, rebranded as Firefox Quantum. While there are a significant amount of changes to it, there is also one that might have been overlooked.
Those checking about might find that their default search engine is now Google. This will be the case if you are located in the United States, Canada, Taiwan, and also Hong Kong. This change is fairly important because back in 2014, when the firm swapped over to Yahoo, there was quite a bit of backlash from its community.
Denelle Dixon, Mozilla's Chief Business and Legal Officer, stated that:
“We exercised our contractual right to terminate our agreement with Yahoo! based on a number of factors including doing what’s best for our brand, our effort to provide quality web search, and the broader content experience for our users. We believe there are opportunities to work with Oath and Verizon outside of search,”
It is unknown just how much Mozilla was compensated by Google to make the change, but in its previous contract with Yahoo, it was being paid $375 million per year. Naturally, if you want to still use Yahoo, you can choose to do so, as it is one of the many alternate search engine options available on the browser.
