Google to hold Android 3.0 preview event next Wednesday

Google will next Wednesday hold a press event to preview the next iteration of their mobile operating system, Android 3.0.

Dubbed "Honeycomb" by Google engineers, the release of Android 3.0 -- which will see the debut of the first edition of the company's popular open source operating system designed with tablet devices in mind -- is expected to occur next month, when Motorola release their first tablet running Honeycomb, the XOOM.

At the event on Wednesday -- which conveniently falls on the same day as News Limited's meeting where the news organisation is expected to announce the first iPad-only newspaper with Apple's backing -- Google is expected to show off in more depth a number of new features which will soon appear in Android, including the all-new user interface and tablet-friendly web browser.

The meeting will occur one week after the company released the first publicly available preview of Honeycomb for developers, allowing them to begin to prepare applications which take advantage of the new features found in the update, such as all-new live video streaming support, more Bluetooth connection support, more enterprise features and of course the larger screen size and new user interface controls which have been designed for tablets.

It's thought the search giant will allow journalists attending the event to get hands-on with devices running Android 3, with the invites sent out earlier today promising an "in-depth look at Honeycomb, Android ecosystem news and hands-on demos."

The meeting begins at 10am PST at Google's Mountain View campus, and will also be streamed live over YouTube allowing those with a keen interest in where Android is heading to watch on.
