HMD considering more retro phones like Nokia 3310, but says it's 'not on a nostalgia trip'

At Mobile World Congress 2017 back in February, HMD Global introduced two new Nokia smartphones, along with a blast from Nokia's past: a modern interpretation of the classic 3310 phone. HMD - the company developing Nokia-branded handsets, built by Foxconn under license by the Finnish tech giant - has been so pleased with the success of the new 3310 so far that it's considering launching more retro devices.

"Demand is strong everywhere and we are constantly [sold out]," HMD's chief marketing officer Pekka Rantala told TechRadar, "but we are looking to satisfy the demand. It’s a positive headache to have." He didn't provide any specific details of how many new 3310s have been sold so far, but it's been enough of a sales hit for the firm to keep its mind open about similar products in the future.

"We are very seriously looking into the results of this [new 3310] experience," Rantala explained, "and we don’t exclude the possibility of continuing this kind of approach as part of the overall offering." He added:

We haven’t made any announcement that would guarantee this, but the 3310 has been welcomed very warmly by consumers, and we want to serve the consumers, so it could be an avenue for us.

We are getting lots of input from consumers and trade customers on what we should be doing in terms of the past great Nokia devices, and we are listening very carefully.

Even so, Rantala maintained that HMD isn't dwelling on Nokia's past glories. "We do not feel at all like we're on a nostalgia trip, not at all," he said. "We definitely aren't here to re-write the brand. We want to articulate the brand in a fresh, modern way."
