Microsoft still has a long, long way to go before the offerings on the Windows Store come close to matching those found on Apple's App Store and Google's Play Store. Nonetheless, the last week has been a breath of fresh air for the company, with major names signing up to the Store.
Earlier this month, we first heard of Spotify coming to the Windows Store on PC and last week, Microsoft announced Apple's intention to do the same with its popular iTunes music library. Now, a listing on the Store indicates that WhatsApp, which already has an app on Windows 10 Mobile, is also contemplating a release on the Windows Store for PCs.
While WhatsApp can currently be found on the Store using this link, it is, unfortunately, unavailable for download at the moment. There's no indication as to when it will be available but with a public listing on the Store, chances are it'll be sooner rather than later.
As for the functionality provided by the app, it would seem that the Windows Store app on the PC will simply be a conversion of the desktop app already available from WhatsApp, which is, in turn, a web wrapper for WhatsApp Web. This does mean that unlike the desktop app for Viber, for example, you will need to rely on your phone being connected to the internet for the app to function - definitely an annoyance on both the web app and, soon, the Store app. You will also not be able to make voice calls using the app.
It does, however, feature a decent set of features, such as a range of emojis, sharing photos and documents among other things, allowing you to do almost everything you would be able to on the phone.
