HTC has announced that it is ending support for its Android web browser, HTC Internet, on November 30th. The company is now urging users to export their bookmarks and switch to another web browser because after that date, no more updates will be made available.
The alert on the Google Play Store, from HTC, reads:
“ATTENTION: The HTC Internet app is being discontinued and will be unavailable from the Play Store as of November 30, 2016. No further updates will be available after that time. You can export saved bookmarks by installing this update.”
Judging by the reviews on the Play Store, it’s fair to say that several people will miss HTC Internet when it’s gone with reviews titled: “The best browser (I’m giving it only one star because of HTC’s decision to take it away)”, “Keep HTC Internet running”, and “Why must you discontinue it?”
After the expiry date, those with the browser already installed on their device will be able to continue to use it, but as mentioned earlier, it won’t receive any further updates. As such, it will progressively become outdated and vulnerable to security exploits. The Play Store has many alternative browsers from which to choose, including Firefox and Opera, which are regularly updated and come with several unique features.
