Huawei and Swiss telecom Sunrise set 5G speed record

Huawei has announced that, in collaboration with the Swiss telecom firm, Sunrise, it has managed to set a new record in terms of 5G downlink speeds. The two companies announced that they managed to achieve a downlink speed of 3.67Gbps, beating a previous record of 2Gbps. Huawei said in a statement that the improved speeds will lead to “more and more service innovations”.

While many firms and countries are pondering over the security implications of using Huawei technology, Sunrise has decided to continue its close co-operation with Huawei. This co-operation allows Sunrise to deliver 5G coverage in more than 262 Swiss cities and villages. The 5G connections help the firm deliver broadband internet, HD TV, and 5G gaming services.

Explaining more technically how the two firms achieved these speeds, Huawei said:

“Based on C-Band 100MHz bandwidth, the test is performed in Sunrise commercial network with Huawei 5G commercial network equipment fully conforming to 3GPP standards. Huawei innovative MU-MIMO technology substantially increases 5G capacity without additional requirement of spectrum and power resource.”

The breakthrough comes just a month before the 10th Global Mobile Broadband Forum which is hosted by Huawei with the support of GSMA and GTI. The event will take place in Zurich, Switzerland on October 15 and 16. The location of the event is the same place where the new speeds were achieved so there’s little doubt that Huawei will not be boasting about its achievement at the event. As for the deployment of the latest technology, it’s unclear when Swiss people and businesses will begin to benefit from the upgraded speeds.
