Insomniac Games reveals a new playable character in Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart

Last week, Insomniac Games revealed the next title in the Spider-Man line of games, Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales. Taking viewers by surprise, Insomniac also announced another game for the PlayStation 5, a new entry to its cult classic Ratchet & Clank series titled Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart.

The video game series features the galaxy's favorite Lombax, Ratchet, and his trusty robot sidekick Clank. Several of its popular third-person shooter titles have been released across four generations of the PlayStation, including the PlayStation 5. Today the creator of the series announced a new playable character for the upcoming PS5 exclusive: the mysterious new female Lombax showcased in the reveal trailer.

Insomniac Games also confirmed what could already be gleaned from the announcement trailer for Rift Apart, that the new character is from another dimension and that female Lombaxes do have tails.

Story-wise not much has been revealed for the game yet, although fans will be happy to hear that it seems to pick up where the 2013 title Into the Nexus left off. The gist of it seems to be that the intergalactic duo will once again be separated due to a rift in the dimensions. This aligns with the ending of Into the Nexus, the last game to continue the storyline chronologically, where Clank finally acquired the Dimensionator and was hoping to help his buddy find the lost Lombax race.

In the announcement trailer posted by Insomniac, viewers can see Ratchet and Clank flying across multiple collapsing dimensions with seamless gameplay and no lengthy, tedious loading screens. Apart from portraying the story and gameplay, this might have also been a strategic move to showcase the power and capabilities of the PS5's SSD.

Not much else has been released pertaining to the upcoming Ratchet & Clank title as of yet. Hopefully Insomniac will shed more light on the matter in the coming future, especially as the launch of Sony's next-gen console approaches.
