Instagram gains 10 million new users in 10 days

It's been a good month for Instagram. Actually, it's been a pretty incredible last couple of weeks. On April 3rd, the company behind the iOS photo effects and sharing app released the long awaited Android version. Then, the company got itself acquired by Facebook for an astonishing $1 billion.

Now it looks like the release of the Android port has generated a ton of new users for the app. TechCrunch reports that, according to the third party website Gramfeed, Instagram has gained 10 million new users in the first 10 days of the release of the Android version. The company says that Instagram now has a total of 40 million users.

While it probably helped that Instagram was the big media acquisition story of the week last week, the truth is that when you release a new app for a massive new audience you are almost certainly going to get a huge influx of new users in a short amount of time.

While there's been some head scratching about if Instagram really is worth $1 billion, the truth is that any app, even a free one, that gets 10 million new users in just 10 days is well on its way to becoming a mobile app that will be a huge influence in the industry. You can bet there will be a lot of other apps that will try to outdo Instagram's features.
