Microsoft released a cumulative update for all versions of Windows 10, including version 1903 (May 2019 Update) yesterday. It labeled it as a required security update. However, while the update fixed a few issues, it seems to have introduced another Start Menu problem. As a reminder, this isn’t the first time that the Start Menu broke after an update. Earlier this month, the Patch Tuesday updates broke Start for a few users, which the firm then flagged as resolved, simply because it couldn’t find the issue.
The latest issue that was reported on Reddit and the Microsoft Answers forums suggests that the Start Menu fails to open when clicked on and prompts a “Critical Error: Start Menu not working” error. Users that are seeing this issue suggest that the only way to fix this issue is to roll back the cumulative update (KB4524147 - build 18362.388). The release notes for this update do not mention any such known issue, suggesting that it may not be widespread. It is also not clear if this problem is linked to the earlier issues from this month’s Patch Tuesday updates or if these are ones that were introduced with the latest updates.
If you are one of the few to have hit this bug, the only workaround right now would be to uninstall the troublesome update by heading to Windows > Update & Security > Windows Update > Update History, clicking on ‘Uninstall Updates’ and uninstalling KB4524147. An alternative suggestion listed in the Microsoft Answers forum involves reinstalling the Start Menu through a PowerShell command, but we strongly suggest that you perform those steps only if you are well versed with tweaking components using the command line.
Windows 10 version 1903 has seen a few troublesome updates, including ones that introduced the high CPU usage bug or the one that killed network adapters for users. While some may be significant enough to raise a flag early on, other issues might slip off the radar owing to limited testing and/or a lack of telemetry. Some issues might be widely reported, but only be affecting a very small portion of the user base.
