League of Legends launches Dominion mode

League of Legends, the popular free-to-play action-RTS PC game from developer Riot Games, has now released its biggest content update since the game first launched nearly two years ago. The official League of Legends web site has the official word that the Dominion mode, which adds both a new map and a new gamplay mode, is now available for all players to access in the game after a number of weeks in beta testing.

First announced in August, the new Dominion mode gives players a new gameplay design that lets them battle to find and then control five capture points. The Dominion mode is designed to encourage faster matches than normal League of Legends battles. The new mode is also played out over an all new map, the Crystal Scar, set in a "highly contested, war-torn mining village." This new mode might allow for new players to experience League of Legends, which has a reputation as more of a hardcore game rather than one that's friendly to new gamers.

Riot Games has said that since its launch back in October 2009, League of Legends has signed up 15 million registered players in both the US and Europe. Furthermore, the game has approximately 1.4 million players actively online every day. Recently, the developer announced plans to launch its second "season" of competitive match play. The second season, which will begin later this fall, will feature a whopping $5 million in its total prize pool. Riot Games claimed the amount is "the largest prize pool in eSports."
