LG plans to kill 99.99% of germs on escalator handrails with new UV LED sterilizer

LG Innotek, one of the firms from LG's network of companies and subsidiaries, has today unveiled a UV LED sterilizer device for handrails on escalators.

As most readers are well-aware, handrails on escalators in public places come into contact with potentially thousands of people’s hands every day. This is a huge risk in terms of diseases and germs spreading. LG says that its new device - that will source its power from the moving handrail to which it is attached - is capable of destroying 99.99% of germs. This is done by "completely destroying the DNA of germs via UV LED light having a wavelength of 278 nanometers(nm)."

This is a more consistent, and by extension, more hygienic development, than what is currently practiced, as the device starts killing germs as soon as the handrail is activated and does so until the handrail is deactivated.

Usually, we hear about technology like LG’s $19,999 OLED TV or its range of upcoming smartphones, but in this instance, we are looking at one of the company's endeavors in eradicating germs, thereby improving the quality of life for the general public. It will be interesting to see if the widespread use of this technology can result in a decline in the spread of diseases.
