Man who went on destructive Apple Store rampage fined $19,000, gets suspended jail sentence

Last month, an irate customer went on a destructive rampage at an Apple Store in Dijon, France. The man was reportedly displeased over the company's decision not to reimburse him for an unspecified problem with his iPhone.

Various videos were recorded of the incident, including one in which the man was seen ranting about his consumer rights as a citizen of the European Union, as he walked around the store smashing numerous iPhones and at least one MacBook, using a boule - a steel ball used in a popular French game.

Now, the consequences of his actions have caught up with him. After being detained by security staff at the Toison d'Or mall in which the Apple Store is located, he was turned over to the police, and his case has since made its way to court.

Apple claimed that the man had caused around €60,000 (roughly $65,000) worth of damage in the store, but according to French newspaper Le Figaro, the police had not been able to immediately verify the amount of damage for themselves after the incident, as the ruined devices were quickly replaced with new ones.

The court also determined that the devices that were destroyed were display models not intended for sale, and consequently, it awarded damages of €17,548 (around $19,000) to Apple. The man was also fined a further €300 ($325) for attacking a security guard at the mall.

Additionally, the man received a suspended jail sentence of six months, along with two years of probation. He has also been forbidden from returning to the Toison d'Or mall.
