Messenger hits a billion monthly active users, Facebook celebrates with a balloon emoji

Secret Conversation, a new feature coming to Messenger

Facebook’s Messenger has reached a huge milestone for the service: it hit a billion monthly active users, joining an exclusive club of apps.

Facebook has been heavily pushing Messenger for years now with the company first unbundling the service from the standard Facebook app, then forcing users to download the app, launching Messenger as a platform and finally ditching the requirement for a Facebook account altogether.

It’s been a long journey for Messenger, which took five years to reach its current milestone. Messenger also hit some impressive milestones along with way with Facebook noting that every month users send 17 billion photos, one billion messages, 380 million stickers. Meanwhile 22 million GIFs are sent every day.

Messenger joins Whatsapp, Facebook itself, and YouTube among the billion user monthly club and Facebook is celebrating with a balloon emoji.
