Microsoft extends Xbox One sales lead over PS4 in the UK, with 56% share in October

It's no secret that Sony's PlayStation 4 has dramatically outsold its closest rival, the Xbox One, since the two consoles launched around the same time in late 2013. But with the recent launch of the Xbox One S, it seems that more buyers are warming to the idea of buying a Microsoft console.

In the US, the Xbox One - including the newest version - has been the top-selling console for the last three months. Over in the UK, Microsoft has extended its sales lead over the PS4, after topping the charts there during the previous month.

In September, the Xbox One/One S outsold the PlayStation 4 by around 1,500 units. In October, that gap widened to 25,000 units. Of the 99,496 consoles sold in the UK last month, Microsoft grabbed 56% of sales, followed by 42% for the PS4 and 2% for the Wii U.

Part of this sales growth has been attributed to the release of Xbox One S bundles with a free copy of FIFA 17, the latest instalment in the UK's most popular video game series, focusing on the beautiful game of football (or 'soccer', if you prefer).

But it remains to be seen if Microsoft can maintain its sales lead over its rival going into the all-important holiday shopping season. Sony will launch its new PlayStation 4 Pro next month, which could eat into sales of the Xbox One S among festive buyers, although Microsoft will be hoping to appeal to value-focused buyers with a range of bundles available in the weeks ahead.
