Microsoft finally releases a Windows 10 Redstone 5 build to the Slow ring

If you're a Windows Insider on the Slow ring, you're probably wondering at this point why you haven't seen a new build since the April 2018 Update RTM was released in April. After all, we've been testing Windows 10 Redstone 5 in the Fast ring for months, and it seems that most of the new features have already been added.

Today, Microsoft finally released a new Insider Preview to the ring with build 17692.1004. The firm has been working on servicing builds from the Fast ring to make them hit the quality bar that's needed for the Slow ring, something that the team announced back at Build 2018. That's why the build number is slightly different from the one in the Fast ring.

Since this is your first build from the development branch, there are quite a few new features. One of the headlining features of Redstone 5 was Sets, but just as with Redstone 4, the feature was introduced, and once again taken away all before the Slow ring ever got a taste of it. We also haven't seen Your Phone yet.

You'll find a new snipping experience, HEIF support, new pen settings, SwiftKey, and much, much more. Here are links to the builds that you missed:

As we've noted before, it's taken a really long time for Microsoft to release a Slow ring build this time around. Redstone 5 will be finalized in just a few months now, likely in September.

If you're on the Slow ring, you can install today's build by going to Settings -> Update & security -> Windows Update -> Check for updates. If not, go to the Windows Insider Program tab and click 'Get started'.

Update: Microsoft has updated its blog post for this build to note that the following fixes are included:

  • We fixed the issue where the login screen would crash in a loop when the active sign-in method is set to Picture Password.

  • We fixed the issue where DRM video playback in Microsoft Edge from websites such as Netflix was broken.

  • We fixed the issue where Keyboard Settings found under Ease of Access were missing text as well as visible values in the two combo boxes.

  • We have improved reliability and performance for launching Start.
