Microsoft loves to put its neck out on the line and try to predict things before they happen. We have seen this with NFL games and this year, they put Bing to work on the Oscars.
Oscar predictions aren't new to Microsoft as the company's research division has been doing so since 2013. With the launch of Cortana, these predictions have become even more accessible and fun for users. Earlier this week, the company was at it again for the 2015 Academy Awards, when it started showing the probable winners from those nominated on Bing searches.
Bing predictions for the Oscars were shown to users searching for nominees in any category using the web or Cortana. According to Microsoft Research's blog, nearly 85 percent of the predictions were correct. The predictions for the top categories prior to the ceremony were as follows:
- Best Film: Birdman
- Best Director: Alejandro González Iñárritu (Birdman)
- Best Actress: Julianne Moore (Still Alice)
- Best Actor: Eddie Redmayne (The Theory of Everything)
- Best Supporting Actress: Patricia Arquette (Boyhood)
- Best Supporting Actor: J.K. Simmons (Whiplash)
These were the eventual winners as well, proving the search engine's analytical skills once again. Cortana and Bing have been predicting major sporting events since the FIFA World Cup 2014 and it seems that the ever evolving search engine will continue to become better at it very soon.
