Microsoft releases April 2017 edition of Windows evaluation developer virtual machines

Microsoft released the latest edition of its Windows developer evaluation virtual machines today, adding support for the Windows 10 Creators Update, Visual Studio 2017, and more.

The VMs are "prepped for Windows 10 development", and they're available in flavors that support VMWare, Hyper-V, VirtualBox, and Parallels. Here's what's included:

  • Windows 10 Enterprise Evaluation, Version 1703

  • Visual Studio 2017 (Build 15.1) with the UWP and Azure workflows enabled

  • Windows developer SDK and tools (Build 15063)

  • Windows UWP samples (March 2017 Update)

  • Bash on Ubuntu on Windows

According to the announcement, there are non-evaluation versions available as well; however, the download page is still showing the Anniversary Update. Here's what's included in the licensed VMs:

  • Windows 10 Pro, Version 1607

  • Visual Studio 2015 Community Update 3 (Build 14.0.25425.01)

  • Windows developer SDK and tools (Build 14393)

  • Microsoft Azure SDK for .NET (Build 2.9.6)

  • Windows Bridge for iOS (Build 0.2.161107)

  • Windows UWP samples (November 2016 Update)

  • Windows Bridge for iOS samples

  • Bash on Ubuntu on Windows

As you can see, you get more with the non-evaluation VMs, but you'll need a Windows 10 Pro license to use one of them. The evaluation editions will expire on July 7, so if you're considering Windows 10 development, head over to the download page and choose your VM software of choice.
