At E3 2017, Microsoft announced that it was introducing cross-platform play to Minecraft, after bringing similar capabilities to Rocket League earlier. While both these titles now support cross-play with almost all other platforms, one major missing link is Sony's PlayStation 4.
However, it appears that Microsoft is "in talks" with Sony in order to try to resolve the issue.
According to Gamereactor UK, Microsoft's Aaron Greenberg stated the following in an interview:
We're talking to Sony [about crossplay], we do partner with them on Minecraft and of course we would like to enable them to be part of that; one community, to unite gamers. So we're talking to them and we're hopeful that they'll be supportive of it.
Sony previously rejected Microsoft's offer for cross-platform play, claiming that it has to be "mindful" of its responsibility to its install base. The statement received quite a negative response from supporters of Microsoft's cross-play strategy and even from Xbox head Phil Spencer.
Just a few days ago, the developer of Ark: Survival Evolved also revealed that Sony isn't allowing cross-playing capabilities in the title, which once again seems like a move on the company's part to protect its business, at the expense of gamers' interests and wishes.
That said, with Microsoft in active discussion with Sony regarding the potential of cross-play, supporters of the strategy will certainly be hoping that the talks have a positive outcome, which would ultimately be a win for all gamers, regardless of their preferred platform.
